Open the door to opportunity.

A drivers licence is a game changer. It helps increase self confidence, employment opportunities and connection to society.

We take the ‘teach someone to fish’ approach when it comes to providing support that will help improve self sufficiency and long term wellbeing. We help people in our community who don’t otherwise have the financial resources or support to go for their licence; addressing the intergenerational poverty and mental health challenges that are barriers to taking action and becoming law abiding citizens. We take a holistic approach to mentoring, building whanaungatanga and supporting individual wellbeing.

Donate today! We need the help of our community to support more people to drive into a positive future. You can make a tangible difference by paying for a learners, restricted or full licence. Interested in enabling and empowering positive change?

Every week we receive referrals from community partners and the local police for support with obtaining drivers licences.

The Stories.

Meet Chris.* Chris is an 18 year old who lives with his solo mum, who is an alcoholic. Chris has no father in his life. He left school early, after dealing with social anxiety, and was able to secure employment to get himself established and become independent. However, he needed Coast Community Trust’s mentorship, and practical help with obtaining his restricted licence. Chris was a fast learner and successfully obtained his licence on his first attempt. He is now able to travel to and from work. Securing his licence, has also opened the door for growth opportunity in his industry.

Meet Bruce.* Bruce is a 56-year-old male of Māori descent, who was referred to Coast Community Trust to get help with acquiring a motorcycle licence, which would enable him to seek employment and commute cost-effectively to work and back upon being released from prison. After successfully obtaining his motorcycle licence, Bruce encountered challenges in securing employment, having been unemployed for four years.

Recognising his determination and potential, Coast Community Trust provided additional support with helping him obtain a Class 2 Truck Licence and guided him through obtaining a WTR (Wheels, Tracks, and Rollers) endorsement for heavy machinery operation on construction sites. Bruce successfully entered the workforce and has been steadily employed on a full-time basis. Furthermore, Bruce was staying in Emergency Housing Accommodation and Coast Community Trust played a pivotal role in helping Bruce find suitable rental accommodation near his workplace, ensuring his continued success.

Prison Rehab Programme Manger. “We have been working alongside Matt from the Drivers Licence Mentoring programme since April 2023. Over that time the programme has helped 12 men, by supporting them both financially and emotionally in gaining a total of 19 licences (learner / restricted or full). By obtaining their licence, each of these men have now increased their employment opportunities and independence, along with reducing their chances of being back in the ‘system’ for driving contrary to their licence conditions or by driving with no licence.”
